What is a business line of credit
A business line of credit gives you a set borrowing limit you can tap at any time, much like a credit card but with higher limits and, often, lower costs. You draw only what you need, pay interest on the amount you have drawn, and as you repay, that credit becomes available again.
That makes a line of credit the go-to tool for uneven cash flow. A seasonal retailer can stock up before the holidays. A contractor can cover materials before a client pays. An agency can make payroll while invoices clear. Instead of applying for a new loan every time, the money is already approved and waiting.
A term loan delivers one lump sum that you repay on a fixed schedule, which suits a defined, one-time investment like an expansion. A line of credit is better for recurring or unpredictable needs, because you are not paying interest on money sitting idle. Many growing businesses use both: a term loan for the big project and a line of credit as a cash-flow cushion.
Some lines of credit are unsecured, meaning they rely on your revenue and credit rather than specific collateral. Others are secured by assets such as receivables, inventory or equipment, which can raise your limit or lower your rate. Most lenders will also ask for a personal guarantee from the owners.
Beyond the interest rate, ask about draw fees, maintenance or annual fees, and how often the line is reviewed or renewed. Your funding advisor will lay out the full cost of each offer so you can compare lines of credit on an equal footing before you accept anything.
