What is a term loan

One lump sum, one clear repayment plan.

A business term loan is the classic form of small business financing. You receive the full amount up front and repay it, with interest, in regular installments over a set term. Because the payment and payoff date are known from day one, term loans are easy to plan around.

That predictability makes them a strong fit for defined investments with a clear return: opening a second location, hiring a team ahead of a big contract, launching a product line or buying out a partner.

Short-term vs. long-term loans

  • Short-term loans run from a few months to around two years. They fund quickly and suit fast-payback needs, but carry higher payments because the balance is repaid faster.
  • Medium and long-term loans stretch up to ten years, lowering the monthly payment. They generally require more operating history and stronger financials.

Fixed or variable rates

Some term loans carry a fixed rate, so your payment never changes. Others are variable and move with a benchmark rate. Fixed rates offer certainty, while variable rates may start lower. Your funding advisor will show you which structure each lender is offering.

Term loan vs. line of credit vs. SBA

If your needs are recurring or unpredictable, a business line of credit may cost less because you only pay interest on what you draw. If you can wait 30 to 45 days and want the longest terms, an SBA loan may lower your payment. A term loan sits in between: fast to fund, simple to manage and sized to a specific goal.

The trade-offs

Is a term loan the right tool?

Term loans reward a clear plan. Here is how they compare.

Where it shines

  • Full amount available up front
  • Predictable payments and a fixed payoff date
  • Fast funding, often in one to three days
  • Builds business credit as you repay on time

What to plan for

  • Interest accrues on the full balance from day one
  • Short terms mean larger payments
  • Prepayment terms vary by lender
  • Less flexible than a line of credit for recurring needs

What owners fund with term loans

  • Expansion and new locations
  • Hiring ahead of growth
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Product launches
  • Business acquisitions
  • Refinancing costlier debt
