World Ranking of Economies · 2026 Edition

São Tomé and Príncipe

US$981 million

Smaller than any U.S. metro area (39% of Eagle Pass, TX)

São Tomé and Príncipe's US$ GDP jumped 18.9% to US$981 million, but real growth was just +1.0%: the gain was mostly exchange-rate and price effects, not output. The economy held 188th place, between St. Kitts and Nevis and Dominica. Services account for 81.4% of output and agriculture 12.2%, with industry at 2.2% and manufacturing at 0.6%. Inflation ran at 11.1%, unemployment at 9.1% and government gross debt at 59.1% of GDP.

High local prices pull living standards down the table: GDP per capita of US$4,084 ranks 134th of 196, but on a PPP basis, at $6,388 international dollars, it ranks 154th, 20 places lower. The smallest of 47 economies in Sub-Saharan Africa, with 240,254 people, is smaller than any U.S. metro area, at 39% of Eagle Pass, TX. Since 2000, when GDP stood at US$76 million and it ranked 191st, US$ GDP has grown 12.9 times. The IMF projects a +64% rise to US$1.6 billion by 2030, which would place it 178th.
